Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Johnny started his journey to sports at an early age. Later, he earned a sports scholarship at Maribyrnong Sports Academy and made it to a Victorian team at age 17.
In 2023, he was offered a scholarship to play basketball for Sacramento State, which he didn’t take seriously. But later, his career trajectory changed when he made a summer basketball tour with the Centre for Excellence in the United States.
Johnny then committed to play basketball for Kansas and started his freshman season in the wing position. He debuted on January 13, 2024, in the game against Oklahoma and was named to the Big 12 Conference All-Freshman team.
Five months later, the San Antonia Spurs selected him with the 35th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, but he was traded to the Indiana Pacers overnight.

The 19-year-old Melbourne native belongs to an athletic family. According to USA Today, his father, Richard Furphy, is a professional footballer who played Australian Rules Football, and his mother, Liza, was an elite driver.
Likewise, his two siblings are also into sports. While his sister Holly plays soccer at Santa Clara University in California, his brother Joe followed in their father’s footsteps and became a professional Australian Rules Football player.
Seeing his siblings, Johnny also decided to pursue sports, which has now proven to be the best decision; he has eventually made the NBA.
Meanwhile, his parents are absolutely proud of him and appear convinced that their son will handle his rise to fame well. In an exclusive talk with ABC, Johnny’s father, Richard, said,
He is pretty calm; that’s probably helped him a lot. If you ask him what he is doing in a day or two, he doesn’t really know. He is pretty in-the-moment; he doesn’t look too far ahead.
