Bryant Gumbel Has Survived Several Surgeries Which Includes One With About 68 Stitches To His Face

Born on 29th September 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Bryant Charles Gumbel is an American television journalist and sportscaster.

He hosted HBO’s acclaimed Peabody Award-winning investigative series “Real Sports” with Bryant Gumbel, which has been rated as “flat-out TV’s best sports program” by the Los Angeles Times.

In addition to major surgeries, Bryant Gumbel has gotten his face stitched, but not for cosmetic purposes!

Bryant Gumbel’s health issues have led him to get surgeries, even major ones, such as having to battle cancer twice and the removal of a malignant tumor on the side of his lungs, which led to having to remove a part of his lung, too.

As reported by KSL.com, Bryant Gumbel has had his face stitched, about 68 stitches for a particularly severe facial injury.

“Gumbel takes pride in having never missed a show taping in 29 years despite a divorce, two bouts with cancer, seven surgeries and a particularly gruesome face injury — he showed a picture on his phone — that required 68 stitches.”

Specific details about his injury or the surgery have not been disclosed except for the momentary glance at a picture Bryant showed on the very last taping of “Real Sports” on December 19, 2023.

Bryant Gumbel’s face doesn’t show much difference when seen for the major structure, so no structure or reconstructions have been done. There are also no noticeable scars or other differences that can be noticed in his facial features.

We can notice the difference in the tightness of his skin. His skin seems to have not advanced much with age, smooth with fewer wrinkles for someone his age.

Based on his personality, he doesn’t seem like the type to stress too much over hiding how much he’s aged, though his appearance has seen some changes over the years, with the bearded, non-bearded, clean-shaven look or the hairstyle changes and the maturity that comes with age.

According to his interview with Jane Pauley on CBS News Sunday Morning, he said that he had lived a fantasy-ideal life that he had envisioned and would do it all over again without changing anything.

On the same show, he also said, “I never expected others to do things the way I did them…..I am excessively demanding of one. Bryant Gumbel, but not of others… I have a lot of faith in myself“.

He is self-reliant, confident, and self-assured and doesn’t let the outside noise dampen his self-esteem.

He always had more thoughts about his work, his presentation at work, the stories he delivered, how he wanted to deliver them, and the agenda, “how the game impacted the athletes and other people involved in sports.

Thinking about getting face surgery to look younger wouldn’t even have made the list! If not, he wouldn’t have retired from the television scene so soon.
